ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO V
[ARC60306]

Architecture design studio V, themed "Place Making for the Urban Community" explore urban conditions pertaining to movement, events and spaces within urban street context and to provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a community library for the city’s inhabitants.

The projects involve developing an appropriate scheme for an urban contemporary community library within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surroundings.

Practices in the previous semesters can be demonstrated based on the applications of knowledge gained from prior semesters as well as new applications that we will be exploring based on the UBBL and Malaysia Standard guidelines.

Project 1: Preliminary Studies

This first project focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of community library around the world. This assignment aims to firstly introduce students to the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a community library and architectural responses for urban infills.

The Preliminary Studies comprises of three components: Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and Precedent Studies of Urban Infills and Community Library.

Project 2: Community Library

The final project focuses on designing a infill community library. The library perimeters were set to a maximum of 1300 sqm and derived of 3-5 storey. The project introduces the explorations on design development of this project that includes the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.

The objectives for this assignment are as follows:

1. To take into consideration key aspects of urban design and context in relation to architecture

2. To develop an awareness and basic compliance to Design Codes and Statutory Requirements

3. To emphasize the importance of elevational context and composition in developing architectural design

4. To implement and explore the conceptual, schematic and design development phases in an architectural design projec

For my community library, The living Story, focuses on drawing in the local and tourist community using elements that both side are able to contribute and attract to, namely goods and attractions. By using a series of interconnecting spaces, the library creates a continuous flow in the visitors circulation that slowly leads the visitors into the library where they will find a community space that offers opportunities to commune with different communities as they get to understand the city of Kuala Lumpur.
