ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY 2
[ARC60203]

Project 1: Time-line of Modern Architecture of
                Malaysia

This is a major group work where we are required to produce an illustrative chronology poster of Modern Malaysian Architecture that interprets the Modern Malaysian Architectural language and architecture influences to the architectural development of Malaysia in particular.

The process involves documenting, analyzing, producing and presenting a critical chronological timeline interpretation of Modern Malaysian architectural history. This project focuses on post-independence architecture to understand the influences of modernism to architectural design, building science and urban design.

The area we were given was the Petaling Jaya area ranging from Seksyen 3 up to Seksyen 11.

Project 1: Report

For this project, we are to undertake a research analysis process based on the rich architectural heritage in Klang Valley dated from pre-colonial, post independence until present times. The modern arhcitecture emerges rapidly from 1950's to 1970's as the economic growth occurs. This follow the international style that spread accross the world in 1930’s to 50’s. However, many historical modernistic buildings may face risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. Thus, by recording, documenting and analysing the buildings, we can contribute to preserve the historical evidence of the valuable Modern Architecture in Klang Valley. The findings are to be compiled in essays and to be submitted using a web book platform.

This is both a group and an individual project. In groups of 5, we are to conduct a research and arhcitectural analysis on a selected building. Our selected building is The Federal Hotel.
