The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. This is a group and individual project where students are to form groups of 6 and produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study and through exploration and understanding the concept of structural analysis, identify of structural components and producing a structural proposal for the building.
The group component of the project requires the group to obtain a floor plan of a maximum 3 storey bungalow, preferably 2 storeys. Students are required to carry out structural framing and prepare structural drawings for the bungalow. Structural plans should include foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and roof plan.
The individual component comes after the structural plans have been determined whereby each student is tasked to do an analysis on a minimum of 4 beams and 2 columns (from roof to foundation level). Each beam must subject to different types of load, i.e. UDL from one or more than one slabs, beam with point load(s) or combination of UDL and PL)
Project 1: Skeleton Design of a R.C. Building
This module introduces the principles of selecting appropriate structural systems and designing elements and structures. It is an introduction to structural analysis, deflections, structural design as well as the application of structural design codes including loading codes.
It provides the students with an understanding of the structural system as part of construction technology so that they are able to visualize structural loading’s action and reaction, followed by quantification through simple mathematical analysis.
