BUILDING MATERIALS [BLD60103]

PROJECT 2 - Materiality of SPACE : An Experiential Exploration
PROJECT 1 - Solid vs Void – “Shaping Light & Space”
In this project, we are required to construct models of selected shapes and using the listed materials, such as perspex, plywood, wire mesh, cardboard, etc; to explore and understand the materials on how the usage and composition of these materials influence the design considerations according to their properties and finally understand how to intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process. We are required to create a model using an assortment of three different materials within a space of 30x30x30cm. The design also has to incorporate the the study on solids and voids and in relations to light and shadow as well.
My concept for my model is "Inside-Out", I have used perspex, balsa wood and wire mesh as my materials. The design of my model is arranged in a way that the solid and void creates a sort of movement in the structure that is either going outwards-in or inwards-out.
This project is designed to introduce the building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by designers in terms of concepts, function use, environmental response, availability of resources and etc. when selecting the materials. This also help us to further understand the physical and chemical properties of the building materials being used in existing buildings. Also, we can also learn the standard construction names and terminologies of the materials in a building. Through this project, we may understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building, the appropriateness of material used in context of several factors such as occupancy, concept and climate, the application/installation of material as finishes and structural materials and also acquire the analytical skill in understanding the selection of building materials for a building or a space.
In groups of 6, we have decided to choose the Islamic Art Museum Malaysia, a modern concept museum located in Kuala Lumpur. The building of the museum exteriorly give out a sense modernism however fuses into a more enclosed interior due to the sensitivity of the historical artifacts to lighting. We were to visit the building and perform an analysis of the materials used on each of the spaces. The results of our analysis are presented in several A2 presentation board, which are one mood board, one introduction, one materials board and one individual board describing our own space in the building
