ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

This subject revolves in the exploration and understanding of the history of the South, Southeast and East Asian Region focusing on the Asian Architecture in relevant to the contextual architecture design and construction, building science and technology, city planning. The course covers three key components that touches on the Contextual Architecture, the Historical Development and lastly Modernization & Globalization.

Project 1a: Case Study Video

For the initial assignment, carried by groups of 7, we are to select a existing architecture that is Japanese, Malaysian or Chinese in origins to conduct a research and analysis regarding the vernacular architecture of the building and also how it is adapted or utilized into the building design.

The building selected was the Chushin-Ji Temple located in Japan. Reason being was due to its design aspects that was affected by the traditional Japanese and Chinese architecture influences as well as considerations to it contextual location.


 

A group and individual project, tasks the groups in Project 1A to study and analyze a street selected in an Asian urban city. This assignment focuses on the sociocultural and economical functions of the local community, to understand its history, sociocultural conditions, traditional trades, significant architecture and important events in the past.  On a further note, to research on the selected street in relation to past events or cultures that lead to the development or re-development of the streets and whether through the process, had they preserve the heritage of the street's origins.

Project 1b: Case Study Essay

Project 2 is a individual based project that requires students to analyse how the selected architectural design respond to its contexts through investigation on a selected building and identify significant elements of the Contextual Architecture. The Contextual Architecture elements may include: 
 

  • Space organization and access hierarchy

  • Sky line, compression and height

  • Features related to the form of the building

  • Building material and systems

  • Image making elements


We are to compile our findings in an A2 presentation visual that is presented with appropriate visual communication design and clarity of information.
